I'll say it right up front -- they're growing veggies
in a cemetery. There, now you can wrinkle your nose for a second, raise your eyebrows, and then (hopefully) settle down and keep reading. Because this is an awesome project.
Meet the garden-minded folks of Allegheny Valley Bank. They're initiating a cool new urban gardening project with a little help from the Allegheny Cemetery. Here's how it works. AVB purchased a large swath of land from the cemetery (an unused swath of land, I might add -- it's off by itself in a nice corner) and proceeded to fence it off and plant a vegetable garden.
Now, a few months later, they're harvesting zucchini and cucumbers, tomatoes and fresh herbs, and enjoying the beauty of their sunflowers and other garden pretties. The connection to us? You guessed it -- the good people of Allegheny Valley Bank are donating their summer bounty to EECM's Food Pantry. Yay!
Their goal is to partner with local service providers to provide at-risk youth with an opportunity to work the garden. The kids would tend the plants and sell the produce at a local farmer's market. Then they could take the money they make and invest it in a savings account at the bank, learning great lessons about the value of hard work as well as the importance of saving that hard-earned cash. So cool! The project is just in the planning phases for now, but you can look forward to updates down the road as it takes off.
Good luck, Allegheny Valley Bank!
