On a recent Saturday afternoon, a group of residents from EECM’s Safe Haven program (which provides supportive housing to homeless men with mental health problems) took at trip downtown to the Benedum Theater. The Pittsburgh CLO Guild had graciously donated tickets for our men to see the musical Miss Saigon.
As they stepped into the theater, their eyes were wide as they looked around at the huge auditorium with vast decorative ceilings. “Wow, I’ve never been anywhere like this before,” one of them commented. The men marveled at how difficult it would be to change all the light bulbs in the expansive chandeliers hanging above them as they waited for the show to begin.
None of the Safe Haven residents had ever attended a musical before. As they watched the story of Miss Saigon with its elaborate sets and music, some of them were surprised at how sad the story was. All of them said it was an enjoyable experience. “I had never seen a Broadway-level show,” said Safe Haven resident Chris. “It was great!”
One of the Safe Haven residents was a veteran who was particularly interested in seeing a story dealing with the Vietnam War on stage. Another resident was simply satisfied to spend the hot afternoon relaxing inside a nice, cool theater. Overall, it was a great chance for the men to have an afternoon out on the town.
